This post is written to conclude and recap our series on the handling of drug related charges in Laredo, Texas. We felt it was necessary to write on this topic due to the fact that many individuals, unfortunately, do not know what steps to take when they or a loved one have been arrested on drug charges. Also, many do not realize the serious consequences which they may be facing. The goal of our last several articles has been to provide information which will help people to more fully understand their situation. It has also been our goal to provide information which will assist with the selection of a criminal defense attorney. If you or a loved one needs assistance, then contact our office today to speak with Joey Tellez.
We have addressed several topics over the course of this series. Issues which we analyzed include:
- How search and seizure issues impact drug offenses
- Defending against heroin related charges
- Defending against prescription related offenses
- Defending against drug trafficking charges
- Cases which involve confidential informants
There are multiple reasons why we chose to address these issues. First, drugs are often found on a person due to law enforcement’s violation of the Fourth Amendment. Cases which stem from an illegal seizure can, depending on the circumstances, possibly be dismissed due to a constitutional violation. Second, prosecutors aggressively pursue charges involving heroin due to the current “opioid epidemic” in the U.S. Third, while many think that cases involving pills are “no big deal,” the fact of the matter is that a defendant will face serious consequences and be treated in same manner as someone accused charges with “harder” drugs. Fourth, while some drug cases may be viewed as minor, those involving trafficking or distribution will most certainly be taken seriously. Finally, law enforcement’s use of informants can create several issues for the defense to raise.
One point that we stressed through each of these articles was the need to immediately contact a criminal defense lawyer if you or a loved one have been arrested. It is important to contact counsel sooner, rather than later, so that they may immediately begin building a defense on your behalf. Joey Tellez is a Laredo drug crimes attorney who strongly believes that everyone is entitled to a vigorous defense. Contact our office today to schedule an initial consultation.
