This is the first post in a series of articles which will discuss the handling of felony charges in Laredo, Texas. I am writing on this issue due to the fact that, for obvious reasons, many individuals do not know how to proceed when they are facing serious charges. Failing to take immediate steps to protect your rights can result in a lengthy prison sentence. I am, therefore, writing this series with the goal of providing information which will help people to better understand their situation. It is also my goal to provide information which will assist with the selection of an attorney. If you or a family member have been arrested then contact my office today to speak with a criminal defense lawyer. I also serve other south Texas areas.
I will be addressing a number of topics over my coming articles. Issues which I will analyze include:
- Whether first-time felony offenders go to jail or receive probation
- Defending state-jail felony charges
- Handling first-degree felony cases
- What to expect when charged with a second or third-degree felony.
There are multiple reasons why I have chosen to address these particular topics. First, one of the most common questions which first-time offenders ask is whether they will face incarceration. While some felonies are probationable, some are not. Counsel will help you to better understand the potential consequences which you are facing. Second, while state-fail felonies are Texas’ least serious non-misdemeanor charge, they can still result in up to two years of incarceration. Third, both prosecutors and judges approach first-degree felonies in a very serious way. Finally, understanding the process in any criminal case is important to ensuring that your rights remain protected.
One point I will be stressing in each of these articles is the importance of contacting a lawyer as soon as possible if you or a family member have been arrested. Contacting counsel sooner, rather than later, provides your representative with greater opportunity to build a defense on your behalf. Efforts they will take to build this defense can include conducting a full investigation, filing any necessary Motions, engaging in negotiations with the prosecution, etc.
